Volkswagen Golf GTI-R: Lighter, faster GTI version coming to Frankfurt

What's the gap between the sixth-generation VW Golf GTI and rumored 350hp Golf R42? It'll be this. The GTI-R, which fills the gap just like the Audi TT-S, which fills in between the standard TT and TT-RS. So the rumored GTI-R, will be a lighter version of the GTI, therefore more powerful and faster.

According to CAR magazine, the GTI-R will have extensive use of light-weight materials to keep the weight of the car down. So, the 2.0L TFSI turbocharged engine will pack 266hp, similar power to the Audi TT-S and S3. All that power will be channeled to a VW-Audi four-wheel drive system, so it'll be the first GTI-badged to have power on all four wheels.

The VW GTI-R should debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales starting late 2009, or beginning of 2010.
