First Look: 2010 SMS 460 & 460X Mustang

The Ford Mustang is getting big news over this week. The 45th anniversary celebration, rolling into dealership showrooms, and now tuning. Steve Saleen's new company -SMS Supecars- has just announced their second tuned car yet. It's a 2010 Ford Mustang GT. The first car SMS tuned was a Dodge Challenger R/T, calling it 570 and 570X for the top model. Saleen and his SMS company modified the 'Stang's engine, added a bodykit, and tuned the suspension and brakes, to call it 460 and 460X for the more powerful edition.

A man like Saleen, will first tune the engine, and he did. The SMS 460 model, is a modified Ford's 4.6L V8 that pumps out 470 hp and 427 lb-ft of torque. That allows it to go from 0 to 60 mph in the mid-4-second range. Add the X into the 460, to get the SMS 460X. The top 460X model features a 5.0L V8 with a new SMS 296 Supercharger that helps it produce 655 hp and a maximum torque of 600 lb-ft. The SMS 460X goes from 0 to 60 mph in the low 4-second range or maybe even less! Available transmissions are a 5-speed manual, 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed SMST manual.

Even for the SMS 460 model, it's way too much power for a live axle rear suspension. So, Both 2010 SMS 460 and 460X Mustangs also feature Steve’s signature Watt’s linage suspension and SMS performance brakes to add stopping power as well.

Although this is a first render yet, SMS announced that what they'll be adding to the exterior of the Mustang. Along with a more aggressive and more aerodynamic bodykit, this Saleen Mustang will feature track wheels, which helps the Mustang handle. They also announced that they'll be giving the interior an "up-scale" look, with Alcantara and leather SMS performance seats.

Observing tuned muscle cars, the SMS 460 Mustang will be best competing with Roush's tuned 2010 427R Mustang. The equaly-powerful 700 hp SMS 570 Challenger and the Hennessey HPE700 Camaro are outclasses here. Even so, American muscle cars are dangered species right now, but Saleen and the others keep working on them.
