Report: 2011 Ford Mustang will be offered with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6, and a 5.0L V8

Although Ford has refreshed the Mustang, it still has to fight hard against its biggest rivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger. Specially that for the $30,000, Dodge offers the R/T model with a 375hp HEMI engine, and Chevrolet's offering is a 420hp 6.2L V8. Whereas $30,000 at Ford, is worth just a 315hp 4.6L V8. So Ford now knows that they have to do something about it for next year. So for 2010 nothing will change, but 2011 will feature a fleet of new engines for the 'Stang.

Ofcourse, for about $40,000 Ford sells the GT500 model that simply smashes the opponents. As for the mid-market, Ford is planning two new projects for the 'Stang.

Firstly, Ford will equip the Mustang with Ford's all new EcoBoost system. It's the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 that will also be featured in the 2010 Ford Flex. That offers for V8 power, we expect around 355hp, but with V6 fuel efficiency, at least 23 mpg on the highway.

Ford also announced that they're working on another V8 for the pony car. It's a 5.0L V8 code-named "Coyote". The "Coyote" 5.0L is set to have as Ford said "huge heads", and will return promising horsepower numbers: 400hp and 400lb-ft of torque. Expect this engine to replace the current 4.6L.

So finally, a 5.0L 'Stang is coming back. However with that in-mind, who will buy the 2010 Mustang? Because most Ford enthusiasts will probably wait for a year and get the full-fat 5.0L. Other consumers will also probably wait next year to get the amazing EcoBoost technology. So we don't expect very high sales now for this year model. Let us all wait for next year then! When the muscle-car battle heats up!
