IIHS Crash Tests: Minicars perform poorly against mid-size sedans in collisions

Part of our dependence on car transportation, that they're generally safe. Saftey is always an issue when developing new cars. Since there has been an inflation of small economical cars recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash-tested some of them against everyday, normal mid-size sedans. The results were...

Terrifying! Toyota’s Yaris, Honda’s Fit and Smart’s ForTwo, which claim to be the best of the city automobile, all performed "poorly" on the IIHS frontal crash tests with mid-sized sedans like Honda's Accord. The study shows that all three mini-cars collapsed upon impact into the area around the driver dummy. IIHS said that drivers in all of the three subcompact vehicles face a high-risk of head and leg injuries after test collisions at only 40 mph (64 km/h) despite airbags inflating.

“There are good reasons people buy minicars,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “They’re more affordable, and they use less gas. But the safety trade-offs are clear from our new tests. Equally clear are the implications when it comes to fuel economy. If automakers downsize cars so their fleets use less fuel, occupant safety will be compromised.”

So come into buying a sub-compact, think twice. Yes, they might be cheap to buy and cheap to run. But safety is the priority. And life will always be more worthy than saving petrol.
