Report : 2009 Ford Focus RS to break "hatchback segment" record time on Nurburgring

The 14-mile Nurburgring race track in Germany is not only just any track. It's now officially a test-route for pre-production cars, and a true benchmark for high-performance cars to record lap times. However, there hasn't been much events for front-wheel drive hatchbacks on the 'Ring. That's not exactly true on March 31.

According to AutoCar, Ford is planning to take on Renault Megane R26.R's 8 minutes and 17 seconds Nurburgring lap time record for hatchbacks with the all-new 2009 Ford Focus RS. So 300hp on front-wheels might sound terrifying, but with independent suspension all-round and a front differential, the RS can handle cornering speeds faster than a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Rally car would.

Ford spokesman confirmed that the Focus RS is being tested on the 'Ring, but isn't scheduled for a record time for the hatchback segment. He said "“it’s no secret that we will be looking to achieve a time at the ’Ring, but there’s no set schedule for it."

The next attempt will likely take place on March 31.
